Décès d'Yvonne de Chazal, ma mère.
parents of jean-pierre

ALIX Mathilde Donald (>Eveline>Auguste) died on Saturday 17th May 2008

Alix was born on 11th October 1918 in Orange Free State, South Africa. She married Ian Donald on 16th December 1937 in London. He was born on 27th December 1910 in Cornwall, son of John Donald and Helen Burrow Wilson. They have four children.

These bald facts conceal the story of a brave, interesting, strong character the likes of whom will not be seen again.
Alix and her elder sister Ninette were brought up on The Veld, in the almost featureless wilderness of South Africa where The Enterprising went to make their fortune from the land. It was rare that fortunes were made; the work was unrelenting, the landscape dry and barren, the skies big and beautiful.
For the two good-looking and intelligent girls it was paradise, they had constant attention, open space, no manufactured goods or toys, and their imagination knew no bounds. Some today would say they were deprived, but the freedom gave them character.

When Alix was about twelve years old it was recognised that the sisters were special, they were given scholarships it the New Church School in Durban. They quickly caught up with their school mates and Alix passed her Matric exam after only one years study. The New Church (Swedenborg) Philosophy gave then a stable platform on which to build their future.

Ian Donald had fallen in love with Alix when she was a very young girl in South Africa; when she was sixteen he arranged for the sisters to come to England, the romance blossomed and they were married shortly before the Second World War. Tessa was born about a year later, Caroline (Caro) was born soon after the war and then a gap of about seven years when Christina came into the world and about twenty years after Tessa, Margaret (Noggy) was born..

Alix’s husband Ian was an interesting man in his own right and Alix did much to support him in his work. He researched and developed ultrasound for imaging babies in the womb and was appointed Regius Professor of Gynaecology at Glasgow University. He is well known for his text book on obstetrics which is known by students the world over as “THE DONALD”. He had strong views concerning the evil of abortion. Alix travelled extensively with him on lecture tours.
Alix passed away peacefully at the home of Christina in the Orkney Islands, North of Scotland, having three of her daughters around her, Tessa being unable to travel from Norway. The funeral took place in The Orkneys on 24th May and there will be a memorial service on Saturday 13th September 2008 in Glasgow to which all are invited.

Julien Anthony Richard:

Youngest child of Richard de Chazal and Gisele de Carcenac.

He was born on 13th July 1945 in Floral , Mauritius . He went to the USA to study at The Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge . He obtained a B.Sc. in business administration. He is a bachelor and lives in Australia .

This is a translation of Julien’s entry in the “Dictionaire” in which every de Chazal and many of the de Chazal girls are recorded. Julien has now passed into the next world (6th or 7th Feb 2008 ).

Julien was a private person and as he lived in Australia , so far from Europe , he was able to keep his life from us. He had a good job which he enjoyed and was able to retire at an early age. It was with some surprise and delight that I met him again at the de Chazal reunion held in Charlotte NC. The sense of humour that I remembered from our early days in Mauritius was still with him.

Julien was good at entertaining and he had an excellent cellar in which he took much pride. Soon after retirement he was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors did a great deal for him but he did not have any faith in them. He was able to be at his nephew Richard’s wedding to Paula in Madrid , join the de Chazal reunions in South America and again in France last year. At Rochefuret he was ill and gradually fading and no doubt knew that this was his farewell to the family. It was sad to see him going in this way but we were proud of his fight and his courage of coming to say goodbye---not in so many words, but goodbye nevertheless.

He is really the first of this generation to have lived a life to retirement and then die through ill health; it brings our mortality into focus. His wine cellar is no more: he and his friends drank it with pleasure some years ago when he knew that he would not live to be able to enjoy it for much longer. Julien is not with us anymore but we celebrate his life with us and rejoice that he will find health and joy in the next world.

Julien is survived by his sister Francoise ( England ) and three brothers, Bertrand

( Mauritius ), Denis ( Canada ) and Paul ( France ).

Death of John Robert de Chazal

John Robert de Chazal of Sydling St Nicholas Dorset UK died on 23rd March aged 91. Father of Helen, Claire with Winnifred, and Anthony and Edward with Nancy

Anthony de Chazal

The Reverend John Robert de Chazal February 19th 1916 to February 23rd 2007

John>René>Pierre Edmond (who married his first cousin Lucie)> Joseph Antoine Edmond

John’s funeral took place in the local church of the village of Sydling-St- Nicholas in the beautiful county of Dorset.  The church was packed and latecomers were left standing.

John was universally admired for his honesty, integrity, steadfastness and generousity. He treated everyone whatever their background or circumstances with equal respect.

The address was given by John’s wife, The Rev Nancy de Chazal, who spoke of their first meeting in Jerusalem.

John’s earlier years as a Police Inspector in India was not emphasised at his funeral. Much of this period is written about in his book “Sunset of The Raj”. There is no doubt that he experienced a very special period of history relative to England and India.

John was buried in the church grounds in a very beautiful setting. The sun shone. The reception was held in the village hall and the family ended the day with sherry, tea and cakes in Lavender Cottage; John’s and Nancy’s home. All these locations are within yards of each other.

John will be greatly missed by his wife, four children, eight grand children and two great grand children.

From left to the right :

ENGLISH TRANSLATION : CHRISTOPHER DE CHAZAL

Louise de Chazal was born on 29th November 1913 at Villa Sylvain in Curepipe, Mauritius, the family home of her parents, Edgar and Emma. She was the eleventh child, and the last daughter, of a family of thirteen children, and is the last one to survive: she died on 18th November 2006

Louise never married. In her younger days she was much interested and devoted to the education of her nephews and nieces, who, in term time, lived at Villa Sylvain, so as to have access to schooling in Curepipe. She sometimes acted as chaperone to them, leading her niece Elaine Hart saying of her that she was « The Guardian of the Chazal Family Virtue »

During World War II she served the allied cause in the Civil Defence Corps. After the war she went to South Africa where she settled and worked, first of all in Durban and subsequently in Cape Town where she spent the final fifty years of her life

Louise was a Christian believing in the teachings of Swedenbourg. She had many friends in the New Church.

She was always joyful and lively and needed little to be happy. Her nephew Philippe Souchon and his family, who lived in Cape Town, spent many hours with her during her last years, and her other loving nephews and nieces kept close to her through telephone calls and frequent visits.

Karen de Chazal deceased in

Mauritius last Thursday. She was only 23.

Karen died peacefully in her sleep early on Thursday morning. She just stopped breathing.   Over the past few months she had gradually lost her capability for independent living.  For the past month she had depended on us for almost everything and spent most of her days and nights asleep or dozing with little interest in food or drink, the sleep induced both by the tumor and her painkillers.  She has been immensely stoical but we would not have wished to prolong this existence.  We were still devastated to finally say goodbye to her.

Christopher, Nadine and Anabelle arrive today and we will have a service for Karen on Monday.  We also plan a Memorial service in the UK when Jean- Paul & I are next over.

We send you our love,

Debby and Jean-Paul

Germaine de Chazal  has passed away

Someone said "when it rains it pours"!
After two days of contact with my brother Tristan, I just got the news that my mother passed away an hour ago. Although we anticipated this for some time, it still is a shock and gives us a tremendous sense of loss

Monique and Jean-Lucien
