ALIX Mathilde Donald (>Eveline>Auguste) died on Saturday 17th May 2008

Alix was born on 11th October 1918 in Orange Free State, South Africa. She married Ian Donald on 16th December 1937 in London. He was born on 27th December 1910 in Cornwall, son of John Donald and Helen Burrow Wilson. They have four children.

These bald facts conceal the story of a brave, interesting, strong character the likes of whom will not be seen again.
Alix and her elder sister Ninette were brought up on The Veld, in the almost featureless wilderness of South Africa where The Enterprising went to make their fortune from the land. It was rare that fortunes were made; the work was unrelenting, the landscape dry and barren, the skies big and beautiful.
For the two good-looking and intelligent girls it was paradise, they had constant attention, open space, no manufactured goods or toys, and their imagination knew no bounds. Some today would say they were deprived, but the freedom gave them character.

When Alix was about twelve years old it was recognised that the sisters were special, they were given scholarships it the New Church School in Durban. They quickly caught up with their school mates and Alix passed her Matric exam after only one years study. The New Church (Swedenborg) Philosophy gave then a stable platform on which to build their future.

Ian Donald had fallen in love with Alix when she was a very young girl in South Africa; when she was sixteen he arranged for the sisters to come to England, the romance blossomed and they were married shortly before the Second World War. Tessa was born about a year later, Caroline (Caro) was born soon after the war and then a gap of about seven years when Christina came into the world and about twenty years after Tessa, Margaret (Noggy) was born..

Alix’s husband Ian was an interesting man in his own right and Alix did much to support him in his work. He researched and developed ultrasound for imaging babies in the womb and was appointed Regius Professor of Gynaecology at Glasgow University. He is well known for his text book on obstetrics which is known by students the world over as “THE DONALD”. He had strong views concerning the evil of abortion. Alix travelled extensively with him on lecture tours.
Alix passed away peacefully at the home of Christina in the Orkney Islands, North of Scotland, having three of her daughters around her, Tessa being unable to travel from Norway. The funeral took place in The Orkneys on 24th May and there will be a memorial service on Saturday 13th September 2008 in Glasgow to which all are invited.

Emily Mayer

Daughter of Tomi and Irmeline

(Tomi>Ralf>Berthe de Chazal 1856-1881)

lives in England and is well known as an artist. She started as a taxidermist and has used her knowledge of anatomy to create sculpture using recycled material. She is an interesting person. From time to time there are articles about her in our newspapers. She caused quite an impression at a convention of taxidermists in the USA in 2007.

Oscar's London Marathon 2008
Fundraising Target £2000
Only 47 Days, 12 Hours, 36 Minutes, and 04 Seconds left to train!
Event: Flora London Marathon 2008

Event Date: 13th April 2008

As you may have already heard I have been accepted for the 2008 Flora London Marathon. This is my first marathon - It's going to be tough but I'm finally ready to give it a bash. I am also motivated by the knowledge that I am following in the footsteps of previous great de Chazals. I have plenty of training to do between now and the big day so if you happen to be in a dark corner of Guildford and something rushes by - it's probably me. If you're there on the day look out for number 016703.
I have decided to raise money for charity for this event and I would be very grateful if you would consider sponsoring me. All money will go to SAVI. They are a very worthy cause: a local charity and one of the few that help partially-sighted as well as blind people. You can pledge using the form below and I will remind sponsors of their pledge after the event. This saves the 5%+monthly fees which some sites charge.
Many thanks and wish me luck! Oscar de Chazal oscardec@hotmail.com

Julien Anthony Richard:

Youngest child of Richard de Chazal and Gisele de Carcenac.

He was born on 13th July 1945 in Floral , Mauritius . He went to the USA to study at The Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge . He obtained a B.Sc. in business administration. He is a bachelor and lives in Australia .

This is a translation of Julien’s entry in the “Dictionaire” in which every de Chazal and many of the de Chazal girls are recorded. Julien has now passed into the next world (6th or 7th Feb 2008 ).

Julien was a private person and as he lived in Australia , so far from Europe , he was able to keep his life from us. He had a good job which he enjoyed and was able to retire at an early age. It was with some surprise and delight that I met him again at the de Chazal reunion held in Charlotte NC. The sense of humour that I remembered from our early days in Mauritius was still with him.

Julien was good at entertaining and he had an excellent cellar in which he took much pride. Soon after retirement he was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors did a great deal for him but he did not have any faith in them. He was able to be at his nephew Richard’s wedding to Paula in Madrid , join the de Chazal reunions in South America and again in France last year. At Rochefuret he was ill and gradually fading and no doubt knew that this was his farewell to the family. It was sad to see him going in this way but we were proud of his fight and his courage of coming to say goodbye---not in so many words, but goodbye nevertheless.

He is really the first of this generation to have lived a life to retirement and then die through ill health; it brings our mortality into focus. His wine cellar is no more: he and his friends drank it with pleasure some years ago when he knew that he would not live to be able to enjoy it for much longer. Julien is not with us anymore but we celebrate his life with us and rejoice that he will find health and joy in the next world.

Julien is survived by his sister Francoise ( England ) and three brothers, Bertrand

( Mauritius ), Denis ( Canada ) and Paul ( France ).
