de Chazal Family

We have the exceptionally rare privilege of being able to trace our family history over four hundred years to some of our forebears who led extraordinary lives. This is due to family members and historians who documented and recorded their numerous exploits and cultural heritage. Our duty now is to trace record, and maintain the thousands of family documents, portraits and photos which exist in many places around the globe. We need to preserve our historic heritage as we did by restoring the tombs of Toussaint, Pierre-Edmond and Edgar in Mauritius, and Evenor in Madagascar. To progress this there are several courses of action that could be taken: Setting up a “de Chazal Family Foundation”, or some other non-profit “Association”, with a permanent location and contact details. The “Fondation Malcolm de Chazal” which had been financially supported and promoted by the Mauritian Government is no longer functioning and is virtually non-existent. If this was to be taken over by the new body Malcolm de Chazal’s legacy would return to his Family. Creation of a Management Committee with international participation, it would be essential to include younger members and include those closely allied to the de Chazal Family. The organisation would have the aim of promoting cultural activities, acquiring documents, books, paintings, heirlooms and having the family support to reproduce portraits and pictures to constitute a family archive. This Committee would also be responsible for watching over the commercial use of our heritage and giving its seal of approval or certification, as appropriate. Malcolm de Chazal is a central personality of our family. Many forgeries of his paintings are being put up for sale, lowering the reputation of his work and the value of his paintings. The time has come, with the setting up of this new organisation to have an overview of the situation. For this exciting project to become a reality it is essential that it has the support of all the Family. Your suggestions and ideas are sought and will be welcomed. Any subject can be discussed, the structure and name of the organisation, its aims and mission as well as its financial arrangements. Every country needs to be represented on the committee so let us know if you would be willing to participate, even if this is as an observer having a say in its affairs. It is a challenge, take part and contribute to the discussion. There is much to consider; your advice and ideas are urgently needed

For discussion
Foundation,Association or Organisation?
I write from an English perspective fully understanding that the French connotations implicit in these words may be different.
A Foundation: this is an organisation that is funded or has funds as a basis of its function. A foundation is the basis on which a building is erected so when applied to an organisation it implies that it has the basis on which it functions.
An Association: This is a grouping of like things, people or ideas. An alliance, fraternity, grouping or company of people is what comes to mind.
An Organisation; this generally means order or grouping but can be Official Administration. An Organisation implies a methodical arrangement which can be applied to a Society or, body of people as well as something larger such as a Corporation.
So as to a name we can have:
“The de Chazal Foundation”:—this has no regular funds to support it unless members commit to ongoing funding. It may imply a basis on which The Family would build an archive and undertake work. I am not convinced it is the word we should use.
“Association of The de Chazal Family”: This has the merit of being an “association”, so others, such as the Mayers may associate with it.
“The de Chazal Organisation”or “Organisation of The de Chazal Family”: this is a bit ponderous and someone may think we are organised!
Clearly at present I favour “The de Chazal Family Association” or “Association of The de Chazal Family” but I am prepared to be persuaded otherwise. What are your thoughts?

Announcement (English translation : Christopher de Chazal)

We have the exceptionally rare privilege of being able to trace our family history over four hundred years to some of our forebears who led extraordinary lives. This is due to family members and historians who documented and recorded their numerous exploits and cultural heritage.

Malcolm de Chazal is a central personality of our family. Many forgeries of his paintings are being put up for sale, lowering the reputation of his work and the value of his paintings. The time has come, with the setting up of this new organisation to have an overview of the situation.

We need to decide in any order:"
Name
Committee
Structure
Aims
Mission
Financial arrangements
Budget
I have started with a "Mission Statement"
Mission Statement of the--- Name required --(de Chazal Family Foundation/Association?)
"To raise funds to promote and enhance the de Chazal family name by any means including cultural plays, shows, songs and readings. To hold and expand a physical and digital archive of all de Chazal material making it freely available and to consult The Family concerning the roll and scope of the Management Committee."
